Tupul-Charoi Chagotlong, Noney-Nungnang roads to complete by March next year

Imphal: The work progress for road construction of Tupul- Charoi Chagotlong and Noney to Nungnang in Tamenglong district under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) is yet to be completed, Rural Engineering department is targeting to complete the work by March next year.

Additional chief engineer of RED, Kh Rajen told reporters on Friday during a visit along the two roads that due to the lack of information printed on the sign boards regarding the construction of the two roads, misunderstanding occurred with the president of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee, K Meghachandra.

The field visit was led by chief engineer, RED, Pantishing Thaimei under the instruction of minister Y. Khemchand.

The engineer clarified that the work progress of the two roads are yet to be completed and the funds allocated for the construction of the roads are yet to be released completely. The allegation by Meghachandra regarding misuse of funds for the construction of the roads is baseless, he added.

As per the guidelines of the concerned ministry of the central government, only date of come commencement and completion should be printed on the sign board. If in the format the concerned ministry allowed to include stipulated date of completion then such misunderstanding could not have happened, he said

The department will urge the concerned ministry to include stipulated date of completion in the sign board to avoid such misunderstanding in ther future, Rajen said.

The distance of Tupul- Charoi Chagotlong and Noney to Nungnang that has been constructing under PMGSY are of length 13.05 km and 17.5 km respectively. The construction work of Tupul- Charoi Chagotlong is continued by contractor Chingakham Sushil Singh and Noney to Nungnang by the contractor Th. Nodiachand, Rajen said.

About 75 per cent of the construction and renovation work of Noney to Nungnang road has been completed and about 70 per cent of construction of Tupul- Charoi Chagotlong road has been completed. The department is targeting to complete the work by March next year if there are no disturbances, he added.

Convenor of All Manipur Contractor Association, Thangjam Somarendra said due to the pandemic, monsoon rain, landslide occurred along the road and untimely sanction of funds to the contractors, the construction is delayed, however, the work is progressing.

For the road construction of Tupul- Charoi Chagotlong the sanction tender amount is Rs 5.94 crore and the contractor has withdrawn Rs 2.26 crore. For the construction and renovation work of Noney to Nungnang road, the sanction tender amount is Rs 7.88 crore and the contractor has withdrawn Rs 4 crore, he added.

He said the untimely sanction of fund is also one of the major factors for incompletion of road.

He appealed the government to sanction the fund in time so that the contractors can complete the works in time.

Somarendra appealed the president of MPCC that instead of alleging that contractors of misusing the funds he could give advice the forum what steps could be taken in order to complete such work in time, he added.
