Imphal: Judoka Shushila Devi from Manipur on Wednesday received the prestigious Arjuna Award for the year 2022 from the President of India Droupadi Murmu in recognition of her outstanding achievements.
President Droupadi Murmu presented the Sports and Adventure Awards 2022 at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The Awards include Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Awards-2022; Dronacharya Awards-2022; Arjuna Awards-2022; Dhyan Chand Awards-2022; Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awards-2021; Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar-2022; and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy-2022.
Shushila from Heingang in Imphal East was one of the two Arjun Award winners from the northeast.
She won Gold medals in 2018 and 2019 Commonwealth Judo championships. She won silver at the Birmingham meet. It was her second medal at the quadrennial competition, having previously won silver in the Gold Coach event. Sushila was also India’s lone Judoka to compete in the Tokyo Olympics.
Assam’s Nayanmoni Saikia was the other Arjuna Awards-2022 recipient from the region.
Saikia, from Golaghat district, was a member of the women’s lawn bowling team that won the historic gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham earlier this year.
