Imphal: Recalling the spirit of the women who revolted against the suppressive policy during colonial British rule, Manipur paid tribute on Nupi Lal Day observed at different parts of the state.
The state observation was held at Nupi Lal Memorial Complex and at Tamphasana Girls Higher Secondary School, here in presence of power minister Thongam Biswajit and MAHUD minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh.
Prior to the main function which was held at the higher secondary school, Biswajit led the gathering at Nupi Lal Memorial Complex in paying floral tributes to the brave mothers.
Biswajit said Nupee Lal was a landmark event in the political history of Manipur. Recalling various events which led to Nupee Lal, he said that the day reminds the courage and sacrifice of Manipuri women and their contributions in different political and social issues of Manipur.
Biswajit observed that Meira Paibee movement in the state is the outcome of the courageous role of such women, who fought bravely against the colonial rule. Stating that the role of Manipuri women in different social issues is praiseworthy, the present Biren Singh led government hadstaken up several initiatives for the welfare of women.
Construction of women’s markets in seven districts had been completed while construction of another 10 markets at different places are underway, the minister informed. Further stating that Rani Gaidinliu Tribal Freedom Fighters Museum is being constructed in honour of the late freedom fighter, the minister said such initiative of the government is a fitting example of respect for womenfolk.
The state government is taking keen interest in uplifting the economic condition of womenfolk. He appealed to the people to come forward collectively for a meaningful Nupee Lal Day observation.
Khemchand said the important roles of Manipuri mothers in different stages of history are still remembered. No place in the world but only Manipur has markets exclusively run by womenfolk, he added.
Observing that Manipuri womenfolk have also been taking pivotal role in protecting and promoting the culture and tradition of Manipur, he maintained that it is womenfolk who mainly uphold the traditional dresses in the state.
The observation was attended by Cabinet ministers, MLAs, chief secretary, DGP, top civil and police officers, among others.
On the eve of the Nupi Lal Day observation governor of Manipur La. Ganesan and the chief minister extended greetings to the people of Manipur.
A stage play depicting the Nupi Lal revolution was presented by the Nupilal Memorial Assosiation drama party.
Paying the homage to the brave women of Manipur who fought against the British in Nupi Lal members of ‘The Nupi Lal Memorial Association, Manipur’ lighted candles at Nupi Lal Memorial Complex near Imphal Post office, Imphal in the evening.
President of the association, Waikhom Ongbi Bormani Leima said the association has been observing the day in remembrance of the contributions made by the brave women of Manipur who fought against the British for justice during the Nupi Lal.
She said the present women should follow the path of the brave women of Nupi Lal and should raise voice for justice in different issues for the welfare of Manipur.
To mark the occasion women took out a race at Imphal participated by large number of women.
