Imphal: Manipur defeated Sikkim by 2 wickets on Friday at Lalbhai Contractor Stadium, Gujarat, sailing into the Ranji Trophy Plate Group finals and qualified for the Elite Group competition.
“History has been scripted as Manipur sailed into the finals of the Ranji Trophy Plate Group by defeating Sikkim. Indeed, a moment of pride for the state!” Chief minister N. Biren Singh writes on his Facebook wall.
“The state has now started producing talented players who can reach national levels. The team will be facing Bihar in the finals. The state will be hosting big teams like Mumbai, Delhi, Haryana, Bengal, etc. at Luwangsangbam Cricket Ground next year as we get promoted to the Elite Group,” Biren said.
The 2022–23 Ranji Trophy is the 88th season of the Ranji Trophy, the premier first-class cricket tournament in India. It was played since December 13, last year.
“Our players deserve all accolades for creating history by reaching d finals of the Ranji Trophy Plate Group with an indigenous team. On behalf of MNCA, I announce a sum of Rs 15 Lacs to d team for d splendid performance. Manipur is now in the Elite Group next year,” president of Manipur Cricket Association MLA RK Imo tweets.
“Historic celebration for a historic triumph. Players ecstatic after the win taking Manipur to the final of the Ranji Trophy Plate Group where we will face Bihar. Congratulations to the whole team and the support staffs along with all the cricket lovers in our State.”
He said Manipur will play with Bihar in the final of the Plate Group.
Madhya Pradesh are the defending champions, winning their first Ranji Trophy title previous season.
