Rs 2 crore sanctioned for construction of PWD old age home

Imphal: For the construction of government funded old age home exclusively for people with disability (PWD) elderly persons, the government has included Rs 2 crore in the annual budget, said Manipur Social Welfare director, Ng. Uttam on Thursday.

The director was speaking during inauguration of 2-day continuation rehabilitation education (CRE) programme on management of childhood disorders and behavior problems for special educators held at the conference hall of Spastic Society of Manipur, Tapokpi Bazaar, Langthabal Kunja, Imphal West.

He said in the state there are many government funded old aged home but run by private NGOs where PWDs can stay. But as of now there is no government old aged home for PWDs. The government is planning to construct such home funded and run by the state government. For the construction of such home Rs 2 crore has been sanctioned, he added.

Uttam said in the state number of autism case has been increasing. To manage such cases during childhood the two days programmes is being organsied. He said such similar programme need to organised frequently.

He appealed the guardians and parents not to hide their children from the society if unusual behavior is seen to their children at early childhood. Early detection of disorder could be corrected at the maximum.

He also appealed the general public to suggest while coining the term of People With Disability (PWD) in Manipuri term but with a positive way.

The programme was organised by National Institute for the Empowerment of Persons with Visual Disabilities, Dehradun in association with Spastic Society of Manipur and approved by Rehabilitation Council of India.

Thirty educators took part in the programme.
