Encouraging sports during Yaoshang is a good sign: Shyamkumar

Imphal: Manipur is known to the world for its unique arts and culture, games and sport, and increasing sports events during Yaoshang instead of encouraging other forms of celebration during the festival is a good for the Manipur society, MLA Th. Shyamkumar said.

Shyamkumar was speaking as chief guest during inaugural function of 12th Kanglei Mega Sports Festival, 2023 held at Mapal Kangjeibung, Imphal on Monday.

The programme was organised by Kangleipak Students’ Association (KSA) under the theme “sports for a change”. The Kanglei Mega Sports Festival will be continue till March 11.

Shyamkumar said unlike previous years that people used to celebrate the Yaoshang festival by spraying muddy water to one another under the influence of intoxicants. However, in the last few years the trends has been changing by organising sports events at each localities in order to avoid the unwanted incidents.

He appreciated the initiatives of KSA for organising such events.

President of KSA, Sukham Bidyananda as president of the function said, to promote sports in Manipur it is needed to organise such sports events at various places of the state. He said people need to reduce entertainment events during Yaoshang instead should encourage in games and sports.
