30 golden metal biscuits seized from smuggler in Manipur

Imphal: Officers of Customs Preventive Force, Pallel of Imphal Customs Division on Friday recovered Gold biscuits of the value Rs 2.83 crore from a smuggler at Bijoypur Bus Stand, Kuraopokpi, Kakching district, Manipur.

The smuggler was identified as Thongkolun Mate, 62, resident of Sibong Khudengthabi, Chandel, Manipur. He was ferrying the gold biscuits in a Hyundai Creta car bearing RC No. MN-03C-0081.

The Customs officers intercepted the car acting on the basis of specific intelligence, said Keerthishri S, deputy commissioner Customs Division, Imphal in a press release on Saturday.

The pieces of yellow metal biscuits suspected to be gold of foreign origin, weighing 4.980 kg of value 2.83 crore as per market price were found concealed under the rear seat of the vehicle, he added.

The goods so recovered have been seized under the Customs Act, 1962. Thongkolun Mate, who is the driver and owner of the vehicle has been apprehended in this case. Further investigation is going on, the deputy commissioner said.
